 Muharram – 6 July 2025

I hope this letter finds you in good health and peace. Today, on 6th July 2025, we observe Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the most sacred months in Islam. This day carries immense spiritual and historical significance for Muslims around the world.

Muharram is not only the beginning of a new Islamic year but also a time of deep reflection and mourning, especially for the events of the 10th day, known as Ashura. On this solemn day, we remember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who stood against tyranny and injustice at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. His sacrifice is a timeless symbol of courage, faith, and resistance against oppression.

While Muharram is sacred for all Muslims, the way it is observed varies. Many Sunni Muslims fast on Ashura to honor the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny. Shia Muslims, on the other hand, mourn the tragedy of Karbala through gatherings, recitations, and acts of remembrance, emphasizing Imam Hussain’s noble stand for justice.

As we mark this important occasion, let us take a moment to reflect on the values of truth, sacrifice, and compassion. In a world often divided by conflict and misunderstanding, the lessons of Muharram guide us toward unity, empathy, and justice.
